Once my mom choice not to reenlist, the choice was made to move with my Dad for the the rest of his deployments. My Dad first orders was to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. At the time, Guantanamo Bay was an actual Naval base instead of the prisoner camp it is known as today.
I was about 7 at the time when I heard the news. I did not know where Cuba. I looked up where was Cuba in a encyclopedia and learned that it was but was told it is outside the country. Knowing I would be traveling outside of the country got me real excited about moving to Cuba.
The travel to Cuba was nothing short of tedious. I have traveled on many planes before but this was my first time flying on a Naval Cargo plane. Flying on a cargo plane was a vastly different experience from flying on Southwest.
The first noticeable difference was that the plane was not really made with comfort in mind. There was not really any individual seats. The seats were more like benches that had harness hanging over them. Once the plane took off, it became very evident this was going to be far from a smooth flight. Flight was pretty rough from take off to landing. There was one on flight meal. It was some kind of baked chicken that looked looked it came from a TV dinner. It did not really taste like chicken or even feel like chicken. My dad choked and said "this was pretty good for Navy standards".
After 5 hours of flying from Florida to Cuba, we finally land.
